2017 Lovelyzkelly

October 7, 2018

Last year my life in Japan was supposed to be an exciting year for me but it quickly turned into a nightmare when I discovered I had a temporary condition that would linger for years if I didn’t act fast and find a solution.

I was the type of girl who was comfortable with my everyday look. I didn’t change my style much, sticking with the same routine- highlights and basic makeup.

Long story short, About a year ago, I had moved into a new apartment that ended up being infested with cockroaches. I would see at least twenty a day crawling on my walls at night and in my kitchen.

I lived in this apartment for about five months until I was able to leave. Until then, I felt sick to my stomach spraying toxic chemicals all evening, not getting enough sleep, and barely cooking my own meals at home. I became malnourished and sick all the time. It turned out the neighbors a floor below me had illegally smuggled their family in a one room apartment and had poor cleaning habits. Because of this, the cockroaches crawled through my bathroom drains on the daily.

During this period, I had gone on a hair dye kick and had some trouble with a hair salon who didn't apply bleach properly to my hair. After the incident, my hair started thinning and falling out in chunks from a combination of damage and stress from my living situation.

I got a blood test at the doctors and found that since my hair was falling out from the roots and not breaking off, I had telogen effluvium and needed to up my vitamin intake. I went on a hair repair journey researching the best products and spent so much of my paycheck on hair care items for the first couple months.

The thing with telegon effluvium is you never know when the hair is going to stop falling out.

I remember sitting in the salon chair crying and begging my new hair stylist to help me. She was very sweet and helped me calm down and cut the damage off. I didn't want my hair short but I had no choice. With the condition and damage I had, keeping it short made it easier to maintain.

After a couple months of trying to find new ways to repair my hair, I finally had a routine going. Besides not using heat on my hair as often, here are the products I used to stimulate new hair growth and get it back to health from all that bleach damage and telegon effluvium side effects:

Petal Fresh Pure Hair Rescue (OILY HAIR)

This shampoo was the first thing that started bringing back the baby hairs on my head. It thickened up my hair to make it look as if nothing happened and provided it with b vitamins and stimulation to the hair follicles. This shampoo was also anti-dandruff which helped the flakiness I had from how dry my scalp was.

Aphogee Serious Hair Care Double Bundle (Balancing Moisturizer and Twostep Protein Treatment)

Aphogee was a brand that was verbally thrown around the hair community quite often and is notoriously known for repairing extremely damaged hair with protein. The only product I used from this series is the moisturizer. It worked wonders! I used this bottle every once and a while but not everyday. I switched between the Aphogee moisturizer and a couple other conditioners and treatments below.

It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In product

If there's any product on this list that is a MUST HAVE then this is it. The It`s a 10 Miracle Leave-In product does everything from repairing split ends to adding back that shine and life you lost from all that heat damage! It's honestly mind blowing! I used this product religiously after getting out of the shower or when I didn't want to blow dry my hair that day.

Lebel Natural Hair Treatment RP Rice Protein - 140g (Harajuku Culture Pack)

I alternated between a couple protein treatments as well as sleeping the night away in coconut oil. This product you can luckily get on Amazon and is popular in Japan. Protein is good for damaged hair but try not to use it every day because too much protein can actually be bad for your hair.

Aveda Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair

Here is another protein treatment I tried that worked similar to the Label Rice Protein Treatment above. Either one works!

Tsubaki Shiseido Extra Moist Condition

Another conditioner I still find myself re-purchasing today is Tsubaki's Extra Moist conditioner! I put this on the ends of my hair whenever I condition it. It leaves it feeling soft and It's also a great detangler in the shower. Japanese women swear by this!

Oshima Tsubaki Camellia Hair Care Oil

I love this oil because it doesn't make my hair feel oily - if that makes sense. It's a great oil for both your hair and your skin. This is what I used to repair my split ends. Oshima Tsubaki Camellia Oil is heavily advertised here in Tokyo!

Shiseido Adenovital Vital Scalp Essence V

Another thing that's a must buy is Shiseido Adenovital spray. It stimulates hair growth as you massage it into your scalp. I feel like this product was also something that helped make my hair become thick and full bodied. I started to see a lot of new hair growth after using this for only a week!

Japanese Seaweed Hair Cleanser and Conditioner

This is the product that worked the most out of every product I mentioned above and I highly recommend this if you're having hair loss issues. This product is also great for extremely damaged hair. Wawaza Japanese Seaweed Hair Cleanser and Conditioner has only a few ingredients. Every ingredient is a different type of seaweed ground into a powder that you mix with your shampoo or use as a hair mask. I used this almost every day or every other day and I noticed such a difference within days! It smells a bit funky because it's literally just seaweed but it was worth every penny. Don't forget to pop it back in the fridge whats you mix it into a liquid!

For those of you who have extremely damaged hair, don't panic and lay off the heat. For those of you with telegon effluvium, I'm so sorry to hear you have this condition but if you take good care of your health, go to your doctor, and find out what vitamins you need, you will be ok.

The best thing to do is not stress out and know that there are wigs and extensions you can use until you get better. This is only temporary and with proper hair care you will be back to normal in no time.

Life is too short to worry about these things. I always told myself how grateful I am for so much more in my life and I was finally cured!
