Who knew catching your own sushi was a thing in Japan. Yes, you heard right; there's a restaurant in Tokyo, Japan where you can catch your own sushi and, I must say, seafood tastes much better when you put in the hard work to catch it yourself.
I've been to plenty of crazy restaurants during my years of living in Japan but this one tops them all. If you're a traveler coming to Japan for the first time, this is an experience you don't want to miss out on.
Zauo is the ultimate interactive seafood restaurant with a fishing experience you'll never forget. You need not be an avid fisher to eat here. It's fun for the whole family!
They offer a fishing rod for only 100 yen and free bait to catch your next meal.
A friend of mine, Tyler, from the Youtube channel, DogaTV had gotten us the opportunity to experience this exclusively.
Before the restaurant opened, we could see what Zauo was all about first hand.
I wasn't sure what to expect but when entering the restaurant; I was mesmerized by the large fishing boat visitors could sit on while enjoying their cuisine.
We sat right on the edge of the boat preparing ourselves for what was about to ensue. I have finishing experience from when I was younger, but I was definitely rusty.
Once we got our bait, Tyler explained how to catch our first fish. For the sea bream fish, you need bait but for the other fish in the restaurant; you need nothing but the fishing pole.
Zauo lets you fish wherever you see fit just as long as you're careful. Be aware of what you catch because the bigger the fish, the more expensive it is.
After trying to catch the sea bream for quite some time and failing miserably, I tried catching a fish that was more immobile to make it easier.
I went straight for the flounder resting at the bottom of the tank. I love flounder so I was keen on catching it for my first meal.
Once I caught it, the restaurant chanted my name and celebrated my catch. I was a true fisherman and earned myself an amazingly delicious meal.
When your fish is caught, you must hand it over to the restaurant staff and tell them how you want it cooked. I had it fried because who wouldn't?
The meal was presented in the most beautiful fashion. It was the best flounder I have ever tasted and from one meal, you get enough for a whole family.
The flounder was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It tasted fresh, fluffy, and delicious - just the way I like it.
After we devoured the flounder, we decided to try for one more unique meal for the camera. We caught one more sea bream and had them fry the fish whole.
It honestly scared me when the staff brought it out to us. If you can handle it staring at you helplessly, I'd say it was one of my favorites from the menu.
Zauo is, no doubt, great for tourists who want to have an interactive experience at a restaurant during their time in Japan.
